Police: Thief steals Seattle garbage truck, goes on joyride

SEATTLE -- A thief behind the wheel of a stolen garbage truck went on a path of destruction Monday morning on Capitol Hill, Seattle police said, hitting numerous bikes, spilling fuel and running over a tree.

According to Seattle police, an Allied Waste Services driver was collecting trash in the 1500 block of Pine Stree when a man lunged at him and stole the truck.

Police said the thief stole the truck and went on a "joyride," weaving in and out of traffic.

The truck ran over multiple bikes before and hit a few parked cars before coming to rest against another garbage truck around 7:15 a.m. near the intersection of Olive Way and Bellevue Avenue, police said.

The 18-year-old suspect -- who only has a learner's permit -- was arrested.

A portion of Bellevue Avenue is closed while police investigate the incident.
