Police use hammer to free baby from car
ISSAQUAH -- Police arrested a man Wednesday night for allegedly leaving his three-month-old son in a hot car while he went grocery shopping, the Seattle Times reported.
Deputies were called around 7 p.m. to a shopping center in the 4500 block of Klahanie Drive Southeast with reports of a baby locked in a car with the windows up. Before calling officers, witnesses went into stores to find the owner to the car, but were unable to locate them.
Officers arrived on scene and used a hammer to smash open the window and rescue the small child, the Times reported. The baby was lethargic and taken to Swedish Medical Center in Issaquah for treatment. It was unknown for sure how long the child was in the car, but officers believe he was locked in for about 20 minutes.
Shortly after saving the baby, police located the boy's 31-year-old father in a nearby grocery store. He was arrested for second-degree child abandonment and the boy was released into the care of his mother. Child protective services were called.
