Pregnant woman shot and killed, uses final moments to save unborn baby



RALEIGH, N.C. -- A pregnant woman who was shot and killed over the weekend in North Carolina used her last moments in an effort to save her unborn daughter's life, WNCN reports.

Kimberly Dianne Richardson, 25, made a call to 911 just minutes after she was shot. Richardson, struggling for breath, managing to give her location to a 911 operator.

"Help," Richardson told the operator. "I've been shot."

Richardson was quickly picked up by ambulances and taken to a hospital. Doctors discovered she was six months pregnant and performed an emergency cesarean section in order to save her daughter's life.

The baby survived, but Richardson passed away from the injuries.

Police later identified her boyfriend Daniel Joseph Steele as the suspected shooter. He was arrested a short time later and charged with murder.

No other information is being released about the infant, per the family’s request.

A fundraising website was set up to raise money to support Richardson’s baby girl and her family.
