Search to resume Saturday for missing hiker in Olympic National Park

OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK -- Searchers and three dog teams scoured the Olympic Hot Springs Trail area for a missing 60-year-old hiker from Port Angeles, but found no new leads Friday and would resume looking on Saturday.

On Christmas Day, searchers found the backpack belonging to missing hiker Jim Griffin about 50 feet off the Olympic Hot Springs Trail and about a half-mile from the trail head.  Griffin's pack did not contain gear for an overnight trip, park officials said.

He is believed to have gone on a day hike Monday. Friends of Griffin reported him overdue when he did not arrive at a dinner party on Christmas Eve.

His car was found at the trail head parking area earlier Christmas Day and his backpack was found in the afternoon.

No new leads were found Friday, a park official said, adding that the search would resume at 7 a.m. Saturday.
