SR 99 tunneling machine, Bertha, unveiled
SEATTLE -- Friday morning, the Washington State Department of Transportation showed off THE 41 pieces that make up "Bertha," the State Route 99 tunneling machine.
The machine parts were offloaded from the cargo ship Jumbo Fairpartner, which carried Bertha across the Pacific Ocean from Japan. Later this month, crews will begin lowering the pieces on to the launch pit for reassembly and testing.
Bertha is scheduled to begin her northward journey under downtown Seattle this summer.
