Texas toddler dies in car as temperature tops 100 degrees
PECOS, Texas (AP) — Police say a toddler died after being left in a hot car during triple-digit temperatures in West Texas.
Pecos police say 17-month-old Avrian Villalobos died Tuesday.
Chief Clay McKinney said Wednesday that Avrian's mother had Avrian and two older children with her when she dropped her husband off at work. The mother drove home and she and her two other children went inside, accidentally leaving the toddler in the car.
The mother later realized her mistake and tried to resuscitate Avrian. She drove him to a hospital, where he was declared dead.
An autopsy has been ordered.
Child Protective Services have taken custody of her other two children.
The National Weather Service says it hit 101 degrees Tuesday afternoon in Pecos, 200 miles east of El Paso.
