UW keeps confessed pedophile on payroll
SEATTLE -- Evan Guros is an IT specialist at the University of Washington, but police said it was what he was doing on his home computer that got their attention.
Investigators said Guros spent more than $1,400 on nearly 50 child porn DVDs from a company overseas.
According to charging documents, he had hundreds of thousands of images and videos of child pornography. Police said he admitted sexual interest in children between the ages of seven and 12. Despite all of that, the University is letting him keep his job.
“His position is not one that is public-facing. This was an evaluation done by the HR Department and the unit where he is employed and that was a collective judgment they reached,” UW spokesperson Bob Roseth said.
Roseth said the school doesn't believe Guros is a threat to students and that he deserves to keep his taxpayer-funded job because there is no evidence any of these crimes occurred on campus. Students we spoke with disagreed.
“I feel like that’s something you shouldn’t stand for at all,” Josh Glassmyer said.
“I don’t think he should be able to keep his job -- it’s gross and creepy,” Zoey Dingle said.
Bill Brastow is a retired UW employee and feels the University should have put the confessed pedophile on administrative leave.
“I understand innocent until proven guilty, but I’m a little bit surprised. I would not want someone like that working with me -- I would want them gone,” he said.
The UW said if Guros is found guilty, they will reconsider his job status at that time.
He will be arraigned in King County Court on July 11. If found guilty he could serve up to nine months in jail.
