Weekend construction expected to snarl traffic
SEATTLE -- Brace for big traffic backups this weekend through Seattle.
Two lanes of northbound Interstate 5 from Olive Way to Lakeview Blvd. East will be closed from 9 p.m. Friday until 4:30 a.m. Monday. DOT crews will be fixing expansion joints and concrete barriers through the corridor.
Two lanes of I-5 over the Ship Canal Bridge will also be closed for repairs from 5:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
The 520 Bridge will also shut down for maintenance starting at 11:00 p.m. Friday until 9:00 a.m. Sunday.
The I-5 work zone serves a quarter-million vehicles daily.
Weekend events could spell trouble for drivers. The Sounders FC have a match at Centurylink Field Friday at 7:00 p.m. The Seahawks face the 49ers on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. There's also the Boats Afloat Show at South Lake Union and the St. Demetrios Greek Festival in the Montlake neighborhood.
The State Department of Transportation says this is the last major construction closure of the summer.
