Wenatchee Lake wildfire 90 percent contained
LEAVENWORTH, Wash. -- A wildfire that burned five acres and destroyed three cabins and one home was 90 percent contained Sunday night, officials with the U.S. Forest Service said.
Forest Service Spokesman Mick Mueller said the fire that burned on the north shore of Lake Wenatchee about 14 miles north of Leavenworth was nearly totally contained.
The fire in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest was reported Friday evening. It spread quickly because a number of dead trees present in the area provided easy fuel Saturday, and three recreational cabins and a home were destroyed. A level-1 evacuation notice was issued Saturday, and two helicopter crews were called in to help put out the blaze.
The exact cause of the fire was unknown, but officials believe it could have been sparked from a campfire.
North Shore Road was closed through Monday for possible debris clean-up. Lake Wenatchee Highway remained open.
Though temperatures remained high, low winds and increased efforts by more than 100 firefighters on the scene helped lead to containment.
