Woman indicted in death of newborn found in storage unit 14 years later
LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) — A grand jury indicted a southern Louisiana woman Wednesday on a second-degree murder charge in the death of her newborn baby, whose body was discovered 14 years later inside a storage unit.
Police arrested 57-year-old Rebecca Landry of Lafayette in June after a renter discovered the corpse inside Landry's storage unit, which was auctioned off after the bill went unpaid. The Advocate reports she's since been released on bond while awaiting trial.
According to police, Landry said she was suffering from alcoholism in late 2001 when she gave birth at home and in secret. When the baby died a few days later, she hid the infant in a cardboard box filled with women's clothing and put it in a closet, later moving it to the storage unit.
If convicted, Landry faces life in prison.
