SEATTLE - The Seattle Mariners were unable to score a run against a Yankees starter for a second straight game as Cam Schlittler allowed just two hits with seven strikeouts, and Paul Goldschmidt's three-run blast off George Kirby gave New York a 5-3 win on Wednesday afternoon.
The Mariners scored two runs off Camilo Doval in the eighth, and another off closer David Bednar in the ninth. Cole Young came to the plate as the tying run in the ninth, but flew out to right field after a 10-pitch battle to close out the loss.
Seattle wraps up its opening homestand of the season with a 3-4 record behind a split of a four-game series with the Cleveland Guardians, and losing two of three to the Yankees.
Schlittler retired 19 of the last 20 batters he faced after a lead-off double in the first from Brendan Donovan. He managed to cut through Seattle's lineup while keeping his pitch count low, throwing just 79 pitches through 6 ⅓ innings.
A two-out walk of Cody Bellinger came back to bite Kirby in the top of the first. After Bellinger stole second, a double inside first base and down the right field line from Ben Rice drove in the run for a 1-0 Yankees lead.
Walks were also a factor ahead of Goldschmidt's home run in the sixth. Kirby walked Trent Grisham to lead off the inning, and issued a two-out walk to Rice to put a pair of runners on. A 96 mph fastball from Kirby caught too much of the middle of the plate and Goldschmidt laced it into the Mariners' bullpen for a 4-0 lead.
Schlittler and Fernando Cruz combined for seven scoreless innings for New York before the Mariners finally managed to get on the board against Camilo Doval in the eighth. Consecutive one-out singles from Dominic Canzone and Cole Young put a pair of runners on, and a two-out walk of Donovan loaded the bases. Bednar replaced Doval as the Yankees tried to escape the jam, but Cal Raleigh – who has gotten off to a sluggish start to the year – roped a two-run single over Goldschmidt at first base to score two runs to trim the lead to 4-2.
Bednar got Julio Rodríguez to strike out to keep the lead at two, and Rice added insurance with a solo shot off Cooper Criswell in the top of the ninth to extend the lead to 5-2.
Randy Arozarena doubled in the ninth and scored on an RBI single from Canzone, which brought Young to the plate with a chance to tie. However, Young's valiant 10-pitch battle with Bednar just missed its big swing as he flew out to right to end the rally and the game.
