Tacoma enters phase 2 of plan to fight city's homeless problem

TACOMA, Wash.-- The Tacoma City Council is moving forward with phase two of a three phase plan to fight the city's homeless problem.On Tuesday, the council approved an emergency measure to build temporary shelters for the homeless, with the first transitional center planned to open on June 26.The shelter will have drinking water, food, bathrooms, showers and laundry facilities.

UPDATE:SEATTLE -- Seattle police arrested a 43-year-old man for investigation of homicide and booked him into the King County Jail.-----------------------------------------------------SEATTLE -- Police said they found a man's body in a homeless encampment Monday afternoon near State Route 509 and Cloverdale Street after a report of a drug overdose was called into the Seattle Fire Department.The man’s cause and manner of death will be determined by the King County Medical Examiner’s office.Police are interviewing witnesses and are asking anyone with information to call investigators at (206) 684-5550. 

Report: Over 11,600 people homeless in King County

SEATTLE -- A newly-released report says more than 11,600 people were homeless in Seattle and King County on a single night in January.Multiple news outlets said the annual report released Wednesday showed 5,485 of the people counted were living in tent encampments, on the streets or in vehicles while the others were living in shelters or transitional housing.The total shows an increase of nearly 1,000 people compared to last year, but the director of the group that organizes the count, Mark Putnam, says differences in methodology make comparisons to last year challenging.Putnam says the increase is partially due to improved methods for collecting data and an overall rise in the number of homeless.Seattle Mayor Ed Murray and King County Executive Dow Constantine declared a state of emergency over homelessness In November 2015.
