Community celebration underway at new Tacoma aquarium

TACOMA, Wash. -- Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium is inviting the community to construct and create hundreds of paper turtles.The project will be featured alongside real turtles ,and for every one that's made, $2 will be donated to support ocean conservation youth leadership.The community celebration and outreach marks six months that the zoo has been in their new space."We closed down our 55-year-old north Pacific Aquarium here at Point Defiance this past year and we transferred all the fish and invertebrates we had there down to the new aquarium," Neil Allen, Aquatics Curator, explains. "The old aquarium had reached the end of its lifespan, and this is a nicer facility to show off the fish."The Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium is also hosting an Ocean Voices Speaker Series.

Police: Man arrested after threatening others at Tacoma motel with rifle

TACOMA, Wash. -- Officers have arrested an armed man at a Tacoma motel where he reportedly threatened to shoot people Monday morning.Tacoma Police Officer Loretta Cool says officers responded to the motel Monday morning around 9 a.m. after receiving reports that a shot had been fired in a room.A short while later, others reported seeing a man outside a room with a rifle threatening to shoot everyone.The motel was evacuated and nearby schools were placed in lockdown as a precaution.Cool says officers tried to make contact with the man, but were unsuccessful.Police say the man was taken into custody without incident at about 12:30 p.m. Monday.Cool said there were no reported injuries.

TACOMA, Wash. – The SWAT sniper who shot and killed the man who killed officer Reginald “Jake” Gutierrez acted lawfully, the Pierce County prosecutor’s office ruled Friday.Bruce Johnson, 38, was shot in the head by Deputy Bob Shaw at a Tacoma home early on the morning of Dec. 1, bringing an end to a 10-hour standoff."The lives of two young children were saved by law enforcement officers from the Tacoma Police Department and the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department who worked collaboratively,” prosecutor Mark Lindquist said in a statement. “The shooting was justified and prevented further loss of life.”Police said Johnson fired at SWT officers several times during the standoff, and used his 8-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter as human shields.The investigation found that Johnson told negotiators over the phone at about 3:15 a.m. that he would come out the front door and surrender.Instead, he went to the back bedroom and was headed toward a window.
