How do I teach my child to deal with an armed kidnapper?
Q: What should parents teach their kids to do if someone is trying to kidnap them at gunpoint? -- MollyA: I wish these things didn't happen but unfortunately sometimes they do. Simple answer. Always, always, always tell your child to run and to shout and to keep fighting. Don't ever give up. Don't ever give in, and don't ever get into a car with someone that they don't know. Not only should they scream, but try to teach them to scream something that others can hear, like 'stranger'. If somebody hears stranger and it's a child screaming that, theyr'e going to notice, sometimes if you hear kids playing and it sounds like screaming and people don't pay attention to it. So teach your child to say something like 'stranger', and to keep fighting and keep screaming, no matter what. It's that simple, and it's the best thing to tell your child. -- Bremerton Police Chief Steve Strachan
