2 killed in head-on crash in heavy fog near Ferndale
FERNDALE, Wash. -- The driver of a pickup truck was attempting to pass a tractor-trailer in heavy fog on State Route 548 early Tuesday when he plowed head-on into an oncoming car, killing himself and the 18-year-old woman driving the car, the Washington State Patrol said.
The pickup truck was being driven by Wesley B. Martin, 39, of Gautier, Miss. He was dead at the scene, the State Patrol said.
Martin was driving eastbound on SR 548 east of Kickerville Road when he attempted to pass a semi in heavy fog, the State Patrol said. But his GMC pickup collided with an oncoming 1992 Nissan Sentra driven by Angela Rodrick, 18, of Blaine. She was dead at the scene, the State Patrol said.
The cause of the accident was listed as "unsafe pass" by the State Patrol.
Officers said visibility in the fog at the time was only about 50 to 75 feet.
