PORT TOWNSEND, Wash. -- A person found an unexploded artillery shell believed to be from World War II on a beach about 1.5 miles west of North Beach County Park and Ford Worden State Park, Port Townsend Police said Tuesday.
Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal technicians were called to help with the discovery on Monday, police said. The Navy technicians concluded that the 70-pound artillery shell was likely from World War II, but it did not have a fuse, making it inert.
Navy personnel believe the shell likely originated from the bunker above the beach at the end of Elmira Street, also known as Land's End Park, police said. The bunker was part of the Fort Worden military base complex.
The Navy technicians took possession of the shell for later destruction.
Police said the public is reminded that if they see anything that resembles an explosive, please do not approach it and call 911 immediately.
