Seattle police arrest man for armed carjacking in downtown

A man was arrested early Monday morning for armed carjacking in Downtown Seattle.

What we know:

Shortly after 2 a.m., officers responded to Second Avenue between Pike and Pine streets to assist Seattle Fire Department medics with a man who claimed he was having breathing issues and was reportedly banging on a bus driver’s window.

Fire officials told police the man had called for assistance nearly 30 times in the past. Each time he was taken to the hospital, he was discharged with no medical issues found.

Police spoke with the man, who admitted he was just cold and wanted to stay at the hospital. Officers arranged for a van to take him to a warming shelter, and he agreed. However, he became upset when crews refused to let him sit inside their ladder truck.

While waiting for the van, the man yelled at officers and walked away, police said.

Nearby, an uninvolved bystander was reorganizing the trunk of his car when the man jumped into the driver’s seat. According to police, the man grabbed a gun from the center console and locked the car doors.

Officers responded and ordered the suspect to exit the vehicle, but he refused to comply.

Using the bystander’s keys, police unlocked the car’s doors. The suspect stepped out and was taken into custody.

The gun was still inside the vehicle when police arrested the suspect for armed carjacking.
