‘My heart is exploding with joy’: Holiday Hero’s Toy Run hits Federal Way Walmart

Federal Way firefighters rush Walmart for toy run

South King Fire trucks lined the outside of Walmart in Federal Way on Sunday morning, but not for the reason you might think. Rather than running toward a fire, these firefighters could be seen inside the store, running toward the toys.

Pacific Northwest Restoration teamed up with South King Fire and Federal Way Cares for Kids for the Pacific Northwest Restoration’s Holiday Hero’s Toy Run.

"We’re donating about $16,000 in food donations and toy donations, South King Fire is donating as well to cover any overages… and then the Federal Way Walmart is donating $1,000 in food and other things to make sure we’re exceeding our goal," Rich Thompson, Pacific Northwest Restoration’s chief operating officer said.

From bikes to dinosaurs, FOX 13 cameras captured shopping carts stuffed to the brim and firefighters racing through the aisles.

"Firefighters are like children sometimes, we basically told them you get to go to Walmart with no budget and you get to buy toys for kids in need and they just embraced it," South King Fire Deputy Chief Kevin Crossen said.

He filled his shopping cart with action figures, cars, dolls and of course, firefighter toys.

"Everybody’s already talking can we do this again next year," Crossen said.

The team effort is helping the community, one toy at a time. "My heart is exploding with joy that we get to do this for the people," Thompson said.
