Seattle demonstrators react to airstrikes in Venezuela
People gathered in Seattle to voice concern and solidarity as events unfolded in Venezuela, calling for peace and emergency action.
SEATTLE - At least three "emergency protests" were planned for Saturday across Washington. People gathered in Seattle, Olympia, and Spokane this afternoon.
The protests come after the United States conducted early morning air strikes on Venezuela. In addition to hitting military targets, U.S. forces took President Maduro into federal custody.
The Answer Coalition announced they would hold a protest at 1505 Alaskan Way at the overlook walk at 3:30 p.m. The Jan. 3 demonstration brought residents from around the region to the waterfront area.
We spoke with some of the attendees. While many of those we talked to at the gathering today said they are still reflecting and taking the time to better understand what is happening, some had more to say.
"No War on Venezuela" protest in Seattle on Jan. 3, 2025
FOX 13 reporter Shirah Matsuzawa spoke with Felix on Saturday. He was born and raised in Venezuela and is a political refugee. He told us that the news he heard this morning made him feel hopeful and he feels like it's a strong step toward positive change in his country.
"There has been corruption for around 25 years, there has been political prisoners, we feel like there has been a dictatorship with the elections, many times but last time was the worst. They have been overly oppressing in my country, and it has been very rough for the people in Venezuela," Felix said.
Another resident, the owner of a local Venezuelan restaurant sent a statement to our station which reads, in part:
"We stand in solidarity with the Venezuelan people, hoping that peace may dwell in our hearts, that hope may sustain us, and that unity may remind us of our collective strength. Wherever we may be, Venezuela lives within us."
What they're saying:
"Over 70% of people in the United States oppose a new war — our public funds should be used for people's needs instead! This violence is not in our names. We must refuse another endless war for profits!," said the Answer Coalition in a social media post Saturday.
There were additional protests in Washington at the following locations:
Olympia, Washington
- 416 Sid Snyder Ave SW
- 1:00 p.m.
Spokane, Washington
- Maple Street Bridge Northside Overpass near 1536 W Summit Parkway
- 1:00 p.m.
