Northwest city fining neighbors for not shoveling sidewalks

BEND, Ore. (AP) — Bend residents who are hesitant to break out the shovel after a snowstorm could find themselves with a fine now that officials are increasing enforcement of the city's snow-removal code.

The Bulletin reports (http://is.gd/ETRRcO ) that starting Tuesday, owners of commercial properties must clear adjoining sidewalks within six hours of a storm. Residential property owners have 24 hours to clear sidewalks. Both rules are subject to a fine of up to $100 a day.

Head of Bend code enforcement James Goff says it has been years since fines have been issued for the snow-removal code. He says due to limited staffing, enforcement had been nonexistent. But after multiple letters asking businesses and residents to shovel saw little effect, fines will again be imposed.
