Police investigating two separate fatal crashes in Bellingham; one as vehicular homicide

Police are investigating two deadly crashes that happened overnight in Bellingham, less than an hour apart. 

The first crash involved a 54-year-old bicyclist who was hit by a car on Mount Baker Highway near Chance Road around 7:53 p.m. Police said he was wearing all dark clothing on a dark stretch of road and the driver did not see him. 

The bicyclist died of his injuries at the scene. The driver is not facing criminal charges.

The second crash happened at 8:46 p.m. This instance involved two cars racing.

One car crashed and turned on its side at the intersection of Woburn, Iowa and Yew Streets. Witnesses said the car lost control and hit a tree. 

The passenger of the car died at the scene from his injuries. 

Officers say the driver of the car that crashed was exhibiting signs of intoxication. He was charged with vehicular homicide. 

Investigators said the incidents were not connected. No further details have been released.
