Two people are safe after their propane heater caused an explosion in the car they were sleeping in on Saturday. Now, firefighters have tips for avoiding similar mishaps.

First responders say a faulty connection resulted in the car filling with propane which led to an explosion.

In response, the Everett Fire Department is reminding the public about the risks associated with using fuel heaters in enclosed spaces, whether inside vehicles or buildings.

How to safely warm your car and home in winter

  • Always maintain proper ventilation by keeping doors and windows slightly open.
  • Keep heaters at least three feet away from flammable materials.
  • Ensure that carbon monoxide detectors are functioning properly in your home.
  • Regularly inspect your heater for any damage and avoid leaving it unattended.

"Using a propane heater inside a vehicle raises significant safety concerns due to the confined space, lack of ventilation, risk of ignition, and potential carbon monoxide buildup, which can lead to serious injuries or death," said EFD.

The Red Cross is assisting the individuals who were displaced.
