Repair crews continue work to restore communications in San Juans
SAN JUAN ISLANDS - CenturyLink repair crews continue to work to restore land-line and cell communications in the San Juan Islands, which were disrupted when an underwater communications cable was cut on November 5th.
CenturyLink crews, along with OPALCO (Orcas Power and Light Cooperative) have been working to restore local, long distance, Internet and 911 services to the Islands.
CenturyLink has brought in resources from across the state to assist repairs to the fiber cable, which is more than 2 miles in length, and rests at a depth of 250 feet. So far the exact reason for the cut to the underwater fiber cable has not been determine, a press release from CenturyLink reported.
The repair operation includes a team of divers, three tug boats, two remote operating vessels, and two barges.
The barges are located between the coast of Pear Point off San Juan Island and Fishermen's Bay on Lopez Island.
