Shark attack reported off NC coast; video, photos shared on social media

OUTER BANKS, N.C. -- A fifth North Carolina shark attack was reported Friday afternoon -- this time in the Outer Banks.

Twitter user Mike Will of Apex, N.C., said the attack happened a half mile south of Avon Pier on Hatteras Island. Hatteras Island Rescue Squad confirmed there was a shark attack there Friday.

Will said a man in his 50s went into the water and was bitten on his buttocks and back.

His injuries appear to be non-life-threatening, Will said. EMTs told beachgoers to exercise caution when entering the water, Will told WGHP.

A worker at the Avon Fishing Pier said red flags are flying which means people should avoid the water.

The North Carolina coast has seen multiple shark-bite incidents in recent weeks.

On Wednesday, an 8-year-old boy suffered what appeared to be a shark bite. Police said the wounds were superficial and the injuries were minor.

On June 14, a 12-year-old girl from Archdale and a 16-year-old boy from Colorado both lost their arms in shark attacks at Oak Island.

A 13-year-old girl was bitten while boogie boarding off Ocean Isle Beach on June 11.

In that incident, the victim suffered non-life threatening injuries, but the shark took bites of her boogie board.
