Man arrested in connection to WSU shooting that killed one, injured another
PULLMAN, Wash. - Pullman Police have arrested a suspect in connection to a shooting at Washington State University's Greek Row area that killed one man and severely injured another.
Officers were called to WSU’s Greek Row area early Saturday morning, responding to complaints of a loud house party. As they walked up to the house, they heard several gunshots nearby.
Police found two men injured with gunshot wounds—identified as 23-year-old Liban Barre and 22-year-old WSU football player Brandon Gray.
Officers rendered aid while Pullman Fire arrived, and the two were transported to Pullman Regional Hospital. Police say Barre died from his injuries and Gray was taken by Lifeflight to Spokane for treatment. Gray is currently in ‘serious but stable’ condition, according to Pullman Police.
Family members of Barre held a funeral service in King County on Wednesday.
"He was one of my closest friends. He was a brother. He was a brother to everybody. He was a friend of everyone. He made you feel good about yourself and that was the beauty and the impact that he left on this world," said cousin Mohamed Abdi. "I'm just hoping to live out his dream you know our shared dream together and do it in honor of his name."
Abdi is running for a seat on the Tukwila City Council and said it's now in honor of Barre.
Barre most recently worked for African Community Housing and Development and dedicated himself to the rental assistance program to help families and people in need.
"It’s a day of mourning for us as a community," said Hamdi Abdulle, Executive Director of the African Community Housing and Development. "We hope that we will come up with a solution from the community as well, and at the same time make sure that he gets the justice that he deserves and his family deserves."
His family has started a gofundme campaign to start charitable projects in Barre's name.
At 7:18 a.m., officers arrested 23-year-old George Melvin Harris III for second-degree assault.
Police say this incident is likely an isolated case and there is no active shooter.
Anyone with information in the incident is urged to call Pullman Police Department at (509) 334-0802.
