State responds to crude oil spill in Anacortes

UPDATE: Cleanup was finished Sunday morning. Officials say no one was injured, and wildlife and fisheries were not impacted.

The state's Department of Ecology responded Saturday morning to an oil spill in Anacortes.

The spill happened late Friday night at the Shell Puget Sound Refinery, the agency said.

About 5 million gallons of Alaskan crude was being transferred from a barge to the facility when the spill occurred. A Coast Guard spokesman said initial estimates are that about 15 to 20 gallons spilled.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Trevor Lilburn said the majority of that oil landed on the barge itself, with a small amount making its way into the water and creating a sheen.

A containment boom was in place at the time of the spill, Lilburn said. A secondary boom was also set up and is covering an area of about 225 feet by 30 feet, the department tweeted.

Personnel from Shell, the U.S. Coast Guard and the Department of Ecology are all working to clean up the spill, Lilburn said.
