Troopers seek witnesses to 27-car pileup near Mount Vernon
MOUNT VERNON -- State troopers are looking for witnesses to the 27-car pileup Saturday on Interstate 5.
Northbound lanes of I-5 were closed for several hours near Anderson Road in Mount Vernon following the multi-vehicle collision. The crashes happened around 8:30 a.m. just south of an ongoing criminal investigation, which had shut down the roadway earlier in the morning.
Washington State Patrol troopers said a semi-truck hauling gravel was traveling south, when the driver crossed the median and smashed into stopped traffic in the northbound lanes.
The semi-truck driver and the first person hit were taken to Harborview with critical injuries. Four others were taken to hospitals in Skagit County, with injuries ranging from broken bones to general pain.
I-5 reopened around 6 p.m. Saturday. Troopers said the semi-truck driver lost control of his truck during a medical condition.
Now, troopers hope witnesses to the crash will come forward. Anyone who saw the collision or events leading up to it are encouraged to call patrol detective Ed Collins at 360-805-1153.
