13-year-old Port Angeles boy drowns while on youth group trip to Oregon

GRESHAM, Ore. (KPTV) -- A teenage boy on a youth group trip from Port Angeles, Wash., was pulled from the Sandy River and rushed to the hospital on Wednesday afternoon, but later died at the hospital.

Emergency crews responded to Oxbow Park at about 3:40 p.m., KPTV reported.

Firefighters said Aaron Peters, 13, was walking across the river near the boat ramp with his Native American youth group from Port Angeles. As the group got to the last 30 feet, they had to start swimming to reach the other side.

Firefighters said Peters was washed away.

Fire crews later found him underwater. Peters was taken to the hospital.

Multnomah County Sheriff's Office said Peters died at the hospital.

According to the sheriff's office, Peters was under water for 30 minutes.
