Activists block railroad tracks leading to Anacortes oil refineries

ANACORTES, Wash. — Dozens of people have blocked railroad tracks leading to two refineries in northwest Washington state to protest the flow of oil from trains.

Event spokesman Ahmed Gaya says about 150 people spent the night sleeping in tents on tracks near Anacortes, about 70 miles north of Seattle.

Gaya says many are feeling jubilant Saturday morning as they prepare for a second day of demonstrations targeting the nearby Shell and Tesoro oil refineries.

Skagit County spokeswoman Bronlea Mishler said there have been no arrests. She said Saturday morning that authorities are "playing it by ear" and had no plans to move the activists.

The three-day protests that began Friday include "kayaktivists" demonstrating on water, an indigenous ceremony and a march in front of the oil refineries.
