Another beach closure -- this time because of sewage spill

BAINBRIDGE ISLAND -- Health officials are warning everyone to stay out of Eagle Harbor because of a sewage spill.

A sewage line broke around 10:30 a.m. Sunday near the Washington State Ferry terminal. Officials said that sent an unknown amount of sewage into the harbor.

The break was sealed around 1:30 p.m. Crews will not be able to permanently repair the sewer line until the tide is low enough to get to the pipe.

Officials said the break happened while a city contractor was digging to replace the 40-year-old cast iron pipe.

The Kitsap Health District issued an advisory to stay out of the water at Eagle Harbor and away from area beaches until further notice. Shellfish harvesting was already closed.
