Billing error affects online Seattle City Light customers

SEATTLE – Seattle City Light is warning that some customers may have gotten an incorrect statement through its online billing service.

The problem involves the utility’s eBilling online payment system. According to SCL’s Scott Thomsen, some customers who were billed on May 27 received incorrect amounts on their statement.

The problem was discovered by City Light staffers the following day, he said.

An error in the program was found, and the eBilling system was then taken down. Thomsen says that the system will stay down until the error is fixed, but no timetable has been set.

Any payments that was made online on May 27 went to the correct accounts, but with eBilling down, the “one-time payment” option will need to be used by online bill payers, Thomsen said. That has not been affected by the eBilling shutdown.

No personal information was exposed by the technical glitch. That includes numbers for bank accounts, credit cards, debit cards or Social Security cards.
