Bremerton considers allowing fire chief to ban fireworks

BREMERTON, Wash. (AP) — The Bremerton City Council will vote Wednesday to give the city's fire chief the authority to ban fireworks.

The Kitsap Sun reports that the council discussed the ban at its meeting last week. The chief would be able to ban the explosives during periods of extreme fire danger.

If the council approves the ban, it would not go into effect until July 4, 2017 due to state law.

Officials say Bremerton fire crews have responded to 25 fireworks-related calls this year, up from seven in 2014. They say the increase in fires is a result of the hot, dry weather.

It is only legal to shoot fireworks in Bremerton from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on July 4.
