Deputies: Man blew up garage while barricaded from police inside

MASON COUNTY -- Sheriff's deputies are investigating why a allegedly blew up a garage while he was barricaded inside, refusing to surrender to police.

Mason County sheriff's deputies were called around 9:16 p.m. Wednesday to a home in the 100 block of SE Shadowood Blvd. South in Shelton with reports of a suicidal suspect. The suspect, wanted for suspicion of domestic violence and assault, was well known to police, officers said.

Mason County sheriff's deputies, Shelton police officers and Squaxin Island Department of Public Safety officers drove to the scene and discovered the suspect was alive and held up in a garage.

The suspect barricaded himself in the garage, police said, and refused to come out, claiming he had guns inside.

Police were monitoring the situation when there was a large explosion blowing off the garage door, police said. The man inside suffered serious injuries was transported to Mason General Hospital and later airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

His condition is unknown at this time.

Police are unsure whether the man purposefully blew up the garage, or if it was part of the accidental explosion of a "booby trap" the man had constructed.

Investigators are now trying to determine if more explosives are inside, police said.
