Elderly woman dead, another critical when moment of kindness ends in tragedy
LACEY -- One elderly woman is dead and another is in critical condition after being hit by an SUV in a grocery store parking lot. Police said the women were struck by the vehicle when one fell and the other bent to pick her up.
Witnesses told police they spotted two elderly women -- one in her 90s and the other in her 80s -- walking through the parking lot of a QFC grocery store late Tuesday night in the 4000 block of Whitman Lane SE in Lacey.
One of the women fell, witnesses said, and the other bent to help her up when they were both struck by a slow moving mid-sized SUV.
Lacey police said both when suffered life-threatening injuries in the crash and were flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. One of the women died at the hospital, and the other is still in critical condition.
Police are investigating the crash, but said there are no indications alcohol was a factor.
