Fans strike out in ex-Mariners event that was a hoax

Mariners fans were disappointed last weekend when a meet and greet with Edgar Martinez, Jay Buhner and Dan Wilson turned out to be a hoax.

SEDRO-WOOLLEY -- More than 60 people stood in line for hours Saturday morning outside a Burger King, expecting to meet former Seattle Mariners Dan Wilson, Jay Buhner and Edgar Martinez.

What they got instead was a four-hour wait in the hot sun for the celebrities, who never showed up. The Mariners said the event was a hoax.

According to the Skagit Valley Herald, the owner of the Sedro-Woolley and Mount Vernon Burger King franchises said the ex-Mariners were scheduled to sign autographs and meet fans Saturday and Sunday. Around 1 p.m., word came that Martinez was sick and the other players were with him in the car and there would be no event.

"As far as we know, no one ever contacted Edgar, Jay or Dan about doing an autograph session. We were never contacted about it. So that sounds to me like a hoax," said Rebecca Hale, director of public information for the team. "Which is a shame because I hear that a lot of people were frustrated and disappointed."

The owner told the Skagit Valley Herald he understood it to be a legitimate event, but had left the planning up to his manager.
