Firefighter from Texas missing on Columbia River Gorge hike

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Searchers are looking for a missing hiker from Texas who split from his group at Wahkeena Falls in the Columbia River Gorge east of Portland, Oregon.

Capt. Steve Alexander of the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office identified the hiker as 26-year-old Devin Paez, an Austin firefighter who had been hiking with three friends at Sherrard Point when he decided to head back down the trail alone.

A friend went to catch up with Paez, but couldn't find him.

They waited at the Wahkeena Falls Trailhead and called police when Paez didn't arrive late Thursday.

Rescue teams checked roughly 20 miles of trails overnight without finding him. The search resumed Friday morning.
