Four injured in Sumner-Buckley Highway crash
BUCKLEY - Four people were hurt, two of them with serious injuries, when their car crashed into a power pole, and then landed in the ditch near Buckely. The crash happened just after midnight Sunday morning in the 22700 block of the Sumner-Buckley highway the East Pierce Fire and Rescue fire department reported. Two of the four occupants were thrown from the car - one of them sustaining life-threatening injuries.
Firefighters arrived at the crash scene to find that the downed power pole utility lines had started a small fire. The fire was quickly extinguished and firefighters were able to tend to the two people thrown from the car. "Firefighters had to perform a rapid extrication of the patient when the power lines shifted and were about to fall on the patient and crew" Acting Battalion Chief Brian Schulz said. That person suffered life-threatening injuries.
The other person thrown from the car received serious injuries. The other two people remained in the car and were not seriously hurt. According to Pierce County Sheriff's deputies, not all of the people were weraing seatbelts. The Pierce County Sheriff's Department is investigating the cause of the crash.
