Group sues Whatcom County over redistricting ballot question

BELLINGHAM, Wash. (AP) — A group of conservative activists is suing Whatcom County to remove a proposal from the November ballot that would redraw the county's political districts.

The Bellingham Herald reports that financial adviser Dick Donahue and his group Common Threads Northwest filed a civil complaint Wednesday in Skagit County Superior Court saying the proposal violates county rules.

According to the lawsuit, the County Council held illegal meetings when deciding to remove another potential ballot measure from consideration.

The proposal would divide the county into five districts, with two in Bellingham and three for the small cities and rural areas.

Donahue's attorney Tom Moser says a hearing is scheduled for Friday.

A county spokesman could not be reached for comment.
