Hawks roar past 49ers, 29-3
SEATTLE -- The roar of thunder could not stifle the roar of the crowd.
The Seahawks' 29-3 win over NFC West Division rival San Francisco 49ers Sunday night at CenturyLink Field had a little -- or more aptly a lot -- of everything.
There was an hour rain and lightning delay in the middle of the first quarter. There were six turnovers, five of which went the Seahawks' way. There was a safety, stifling defense on both sides and no touchdowns until Marshawn Lynch scored on a 14-yard run late in the second quarter. A blocked punt punctuated the early going. Twenty-two combined penalties stalled the game late.
And oh, did we mention the fans at CenturyLink Field set an official Guinness Book of World Records mark for loudest crowd noise?
In a game that was heralded early on as a match-up between two young, stellar quarterbacks, it was the defense that stole the show. Neither team went for more than 300 yards of total offense, and often struggled to gain footing, especially early on. But the Hawks road to victory largely on the back of Marshawn Lynch, who had 98-yards rushing on 28 carries with two touchdowns.
Wilson and Colin Kaepernick were mostly non-factors, with both second-year quarterbacks held to low ratings. But Wilson was spot on when he needed to be, throwing for 142 yards with one touchdown and one interception when intended receiver Golden Tate lost his footing on a long ball. Wilson bested an often- befuddled Kaepernick, who threw three interceptions and no touchdowns. The teams were also hampered by an influx of penalties -12 for the 49ers and 10 for the Hawks.
The victory put the Hawks in lone position atop the NFC West in the young 2013 season. Up next, the team will take on the 0-2 Jacksonville Jaguars next Sunday at CenturyLink Field.
RECAP FROM THE GAME
-- TOUCHDOWN Lynch. Are we seeing another blowout of the 49ers in CenturyLink Field? I think we are. 2-yard touchdown run from Lynch after an Intercepted pass from Kam Chancellor. Hawks are up 29-3 with 4:22 left in the game.
-- Hauschka kicks a 37-yard field goal to put the Hawks up 22-3 with a little more than 11 minutes to go in the 4th Quarter.
-- TOUCHDOWN Seahawks. Marshawn Lynch walks into the endzone untouched on a pass from Russell Wilson. Hawks go up 19-3 with 13:44 to go in the fourth quarter. Can you hear the roar, Hawks fans?
-- Hawks defense bends, but doesn't break. Hawks hold the Niners in the Red Zone to just a field goal. Hawks lead the Niners 12-3 with 4:20 left in the 3rd Quarter.
-- Marshawn Lynch with the first touchdown of the game. Slow, methodical drives from the Seahawks, punctuated by Lynch. Hawks up 12-0 with 9:12 to go in the 3rd quarter.
-- There's some passing yards. Wilson scrambles away from the 49ers defense and hits Doug Baldwin for 51 yards. Puts the Hawks on the the 49ers 20.
-- Hawks get the ball on their own 20. Marshawn Lynch gets the first carry, and he has certainly been the workhorse of the night.
Hawks lead the 49ers 5-0 at the end of the first half.
-- Lynch has 101 yards of the Seahawks' 141 yards of total offense. Would like to see
-- We've had some good thunder, record-breaking crowd noise and defense. Hawks lead the 49ers 5-0 at the end of the first half.
-- Game takes a break as a 49ers player is down. This game is taking a while, said Breaking Bad fans everywhere.
-- Russell Wilson connects with Sydney Rice to the SF for a first down. However, Rice spun the ball right in the face of a fallen defender.
-- Hawks again stuff Kaepernick and 49ers have to punt the ball. Seahawks will take over on their own 30 yardline.
-- Hauschka puts one through to put the Hawks up 5-0 with 5:52 to go in the 2nd Quarter. We've seen a safety, a field goal, but no touchdowns.
-- Hawks' fumble recovery! Leroy Hill strips Kaepernick on the 49ers 38-yardline. Lets see if the Hawks can capitalize.
-- Well, there goes that momentum. Hawks can't convert on a fourth down and short and turn the ball over on the 49ers' 40. Not much offense from either team so far.
-- Hawks go up on the rare safety on a holding call. Hawks lead 2-0 with 10:39 in the 2nd Quarter. Who would have thought the first score of the game would have been a safety?
2nd Quarter -- Boom! Russell Wilson has a deep pass to Marshawn Lynch for a gain of 35 yards. BUT, Russell Okung was carted to the locker room with an injury to the left shoe. Not good news, especially for an already embattled offensive line.
-- And Kaepernick goes down on the second play back. Hawks sack Kaepernick for a loss of five. This looks like a defensive struggle so far, especially considering the rain's affect on the passing game.
-- Hope no one is a fan of Breaking Bad... This game could go on for awhile. Now scheduled to start at 7:05 p.m.
-- Game has temporarily been suspended due to lightning. It's 0-0 with 3:13 left in the first. How often do we see that in Seattle, huh? Maybe the break will give the Hawks sometime to regroup and get their offense in line. Not much going on beyond Lynch's 21-yard run.
-- 3:13 left in the first quarter and still no score. Wilson and Kaepernick have been stymied by a tough defense, and some untimely penalties. Wilson is 0-for-4 in the early going.
-- Seahawks' defense has done a good job of stopping the 49ers explosive offense. However, the Seahawks have failed to get much going on their own end, and Wilson has started 0-for-3 with one interception.
-- First fallstart of the game against the 49ers. Lets get louder, Hawk fans.
-- Russell Wilson has his second interception in two games. Golden Tate falls down on a long-ball, sor it's really an interception by default, right? 49ers take over on their own 25.
-- There's some Marshawn Lynch we've been missing o-so-much. Takes it out to the Hawks' 38 for a 21-yard run.
-- Interception Seahawks! Seahawks Earl Thomas pick off Kapernick on 3rd and goal. Takeover with the ball on their own 13. It's getting loud in here, and we're only a couple minutes in to the first quarter.
-- That's some Kaepernick for you. Pocket breaks down on a third down and he rushes for a first down. He definitely has legs.
-- 49ers pick up the first first down of the game after the punt block. Some are saying that a fan blew a whistle in the stands, causing confusion for the punt block. Carroll looked livid about the play, upset at the referees.
-- Wilson can't complete either of two passes and go 3-and-out. 49ers block a punt, and they take over at the Hawks' 40. Both defenses look strong.
-- Golden Tate had a lane, but slipped on the punt return. Wilson and the offense will take over at about their own 48. It's overcast and rainy, wonder if that is affecting the turf.
-- Kaepernick stopped on the first read option. 49ers look like they have to punt after a 3-and-out.
-- Kickoff! Hawks win the toss and choose to defer. 49ers get the ball on their own 20.
