John Reed, suspect in Oso killings, captured by authorities in Mexico
SEATTLE -- A man accused of killing a couple near Oso and burying their remains in a remote forest clearing was arrested by authorities Friday in Mexico.
Investigators issued this statement in a news release:
"According to our partners with the United States Marshal’s Office, deputy marshals have been working investigative leads with Mexican authorities from Policia ESTATAL Investigadora (PEI) in Sonora, Mexico to determine the location of Reed. He was discovered and expelled to the United States by Mexican authorities for violation of immigration laws of the Sovereign Nation of Mexico. He was taken into custody at the border by United States officials and booked into the Pima County Jail in Arizona. It is unknown at this time when Reed might be extradited to Washington. "
Patrick Shunn, 45, and his wife, 46-year-old Monique Patenaude, were killed in April.
John Reed’s brother, Tony Reed, has pleaded guilty to two counts of felony rendering criminal assistance. Tony Reed surrendered to authorities in May near the U.S.-Mexico border.
Investigators believe John Reed fatally shot the couple over a long-standing property dispute in Oso, a rural community northeast of Seattle.
No further information on the capture has been released.
