Jury finds father of MPHS shooter guilty of illegally having firearms
SEATTLE -- A federal jury has found Raymond Fryberg guilty of illegally owning firearms, including the handgun his son used to kill four of his friends and himself last year in a high school cafeteria.
Fryberg, 42, was convicted of six counts of unlawful possession of a firearm.
A jury reached the verdict Tuesday afternoon after a 4-day trial in U.S. District Court in Seattle. Sentencing is scheduled for January 11.
Fryberg's son, Jaylen, used one of those firearms to fatally shoot four friends and then himself at Marysville-Pilchuk High School on Oct. 24, 2014.
Prosecutors said Fryberg was the subject of a 2002 domestic violence protection order, which prohibited him from having guns. They said he lied on federal forms when he bought the guns.
The jury rejected Fryberg's claim that he didn't know about the protection order and therefore didn't know he couldn't have guns.
Fryberg did not testify in his defense and his lawyers called no witnesses.
