Man surrenders after opening fire, threatening to bomb Lakebay Marina
PIERCE COUNTY, Wash. -- A 56-year-old man was taken into custody Tuesday in Lakebay after reportedly firing a shotgun into the air and threatening to blow up the marina.
According to the Pierce County Sheriff's Department, a 56-year-old man fired a shotgun into the air. No injuries were reported.
Deputies evacuated the area. They said the Lakebay Marina had recently been condemned and was not supposed to be occupied.
The armed suspect was on a 30-foot cabin cruiser type boat, and claimed to have strapped bombs to marina fuel tanks and propane tanks on his own boat.
Officials advised people to stay out of the area as they continued to evacuate the marina which is in Lakebay, a community on the Key Peninsula west of Tacoma along the South Puget Sound.
"He's claiming to have explosives and is threatening to blow up the marina," Det. Ed Troyer said.
The standoff lasted several hours. Because of the bomb threat, deputies said they asked the suspect to strip down to his underwear as a precaution.
