Missing Sequim hiker found by his daughter

PORT ANGELES, Wash.  — A missing hiker in Clallam County was found Tuesday morning by his daughter who was driving Forest Service roads in the area, the sheriff's office said.

The Clallam County Sheriff's office said earlier Tuesdsay that 59-year-old Roger Gates was hiking near his home in Sequim on Sunday when he got lost amid smoky, hazing conditions from wildfire smoke.

At about 9 a.m. Tuesday, "Mr. Gates was located by his daughter who was driving Forest Service Rds in the area where her father went missing," the sheriff's office said later. "Mr. Gates was able to make (his) way out of the Buckhorn Wilderness area and to FS RD 2870 and was walking back to his vehicle when his daughter found him."

Gates had phoned his family on Monday, reporting he was along the 3 O'Clock Ridge trail and believed he could make it back to his vehicle.

His family reported him missing after that last call.

Gates is known as an avid hiker and nature observer who is generally well-prepared for hikes.
