New fires burn in central Washington; force 15 home evacuations
QUINCY, Wash. (AP) — A new fast-spreading fire near the central Washington town of Quincy has burned thousands of acres and temporarily forced the evacuation of several dozen homes.
Grant County sheriff's spokesman Kyle Foreman says gusty winds whipped flames late Saturday and scorched grass and sagebrush overnight.
He says evacuation orders were issued for about 15 homes, but those orders were lifted by Sunday morning. There are no reports of injuries or damage to buildings.
Foreman estimates the fire has burned between 5,000 to 10,000 acres, or roughly 7 to 15 square miles. It's not known yet what started it.
Elsewhere in Grant County, crews were tackling a fire that started Sunday morning and had threatened a mobile home park in Moses Lake.
The sheriff's office says no homes at Harvest Manor Mobile Home Park have been damaged, but five homes on an adjacent street were affected.
