New Skagit River Bridge renamed for fallen trooper
SEATTLE -- The State Transportation Commission voted unanimously Tuesday to rename the Skagit River Bridge after fallen state trooper Sean O'Connell.
The bridge collapsed May 23 after getting struck by a truck with an oversize load. O'Connell was killed May 30 when a box truck collided with his motorcycle while he was working a detour route during the span's closure.
A temporary span is in place right now. When the permanent bridge is in place, it will be known as the "Trooper Sean M. O'Connell Junior Memorial Bridge."
The Department of Transportation will install signs once the span is complete this fall.
