North Cascades Highway reopens

WINTHROP, Wash. -- State Route 20 is scheduled to reopen at 10 a.m. Monday after crews spent more than a week removing 30,000 cubic yards of mud, boulders and trees following eight mudslides that covered a six mile stretch of road.

Washington State Department of Transportation will open the gates Monday to restore travel between the Skagit and Methow Valleys. Heavy rain, hail and wind closed SR 20 two miles west of Rainy Pass at 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10. Eight slides covered the highway in mud up to 25 feet deep and 1/4 mile wide.

Around 70 hikers were trapped in their cars for 24 hours behind the slide Aug. 10. The roadway was also closed by a slide in 2006.
