Police: Off-duty Federal Way officer shot while trying to stop burglary

Puyallup Police are investigating the shooting of an off-duty officer on Sunday.

Authorities say an off-duty Federal Way officer, identified as Donovan Heavener, was jogging down River Road near 11th Street when he saw two suspects allegedly trying to pull the doors off the Jennings Equipment building, a business located at the intersection. Heavener reportedly stayed at the sidewalk but had some sort of interaction with the suspects, who got into two separate vehicles and drove off.

While the suspects were driving away, one of them shot Heavener, who tried running before collapsing on the ground.

Puyallup Police arrived on scene at 7:06 a.m. and treated Heavener, who was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Heavener went through surgery and is expected to survive, officials say.

Several roads are closed while detectives investigate, and people are asked to avoid the area.

The two suspects are believed to be involved in a separate incident at a nearby neighborhood; Puyallup Police Chief Scott Engle says they went from the neighborhood to the equipment building. One suspect vehicle is described as a four-door silver or white Chevy pickup with dark wheels, dark windows and the tailgate either down or missing. The other vehicle is described as a black pickup truck.

Anyone with information on the shooting or suspect is urged to call Puyallup Police at (253) 770-3343 or email at tips@puyallupwa.gov.

This is a developing story and will be updated as new information becomes available.
