SEATTLE -- Kierra Clark and her cousin Matalyn Longtain were swimming in the Kalama River near Longview Friday when they both were surprised by something nipping at their feet and calves -- a river otter.

The Daily News Online reported that Clark, 13, and Longtain, 11, had been playing along the shores of the river when they heard something that "spooked" them, so they jumped in the river to swim to the other shore where their grandparents house is located. While they were swimming, Clark told TDN that when she looked back, she was staring right at a river otter, that bared its teeth and "had huge eyes."

Clark ended up with some cuts and bruises on her leg and got a tetanus shot after seeing a doctor. Longtain was also nipped, but she told TDN that she kicked the otter away.

A fish biologist who is a friend of the family said it is likely the girls got between the mother otter and her babies.
