Parents devastated after 10-year-old son dies in Lakewood crash; underage driver arrested

LAKEWOOD, Wash. -- The parents of 10-year-old Dylan Wilson broke down in tears in the front yard of their home Tuesday as they shared fond memories of their little boy who tragically was killed in a car crash a day earlier.

“I’m still shocked," said Rick Wilson, Dylan's dad.

"I don’t know how my son, 10 years old, can die from," he said, pausing. "It doesn’t make any sense.”

Police say Dylan got into a car with his 11-year-old friend and two 14-year-olds. Dylan’s parents have no idea how the teens managed to get the keys to a car belonging to one of their mothers. During a joyride, the 14 year-old behind the wheel struck another car and then tried to speed away.

While speeding off, the car with the four boys inside struck a power pole and then slammed into a tree. The impact was right next to Dylan’s seat and he died soon after. Police said two of the boys in the front seats got out of the wrecked car and tried to run away.

Dylan’s mother, Michelle Wilson, could barely speak after losing her son.

“He was a wonderful boy and I miss him,” she said.  “What else can I say?”

Police say the 14-year-old driver was released from the hospital and police went to pick him up and arrest him for suspicion of vehicular homicide, vehicular assault and felony hit-and-run. He was booked into the juvenile detention hall late Tuesday.

Rick Wilson said, "They ran from the car and left my son and another kid -- a 10- and 11-year-old -- in the backseat dying. They need to go to jail.

"I do want to see this kid punished, as much as possible," Rick Wilson said of the 14-year-old driver.
