Pasco School District goes to court to try to stop teachers strike

PASCO, Wash. (AP) — The Pasco School District has filed an injunction to try to stop a teachers strike going into its second day Wednesday.

A hearing has been scheduled for Friday morning in Franklin County Superior Court. The school district's motion says the strike is illegal.

The district has canceled school for Wednesday, on what would have been the second day of class this fall.

But both the district and the teachers say they are ready to go back to the bargaining table on Wednesday.

The president of the Pasco Association of Educators, Greg Olson, says the No. 1 sticking point in contract negotiations is over who will write district curriculum. Other issues include class sizes and teacher pay.

The district says they are still negotiating over pay, planning time and class size reductions.

The district serves about 17,000 students in southeast Washington.
